2006 Spring Historical Tour
40 Attended Spring Tour at Deep Creek
It was a day made for touring the Flint Hills. The sun was shining
and the temperature hovered around 80 degrees. The bus left the museum
at 12:20 p.m. and headed for the Deep Creek area of Zeandale Township,
Riley County.
At one time, Zeandale Township belonged to Wabaunsee County, but the
State Legislature gave it to Riley County in 1870 or '71.
Our first stop was at Blasing Springs where the remains fo a
three-story hotel built in 1887 could be seen. After this the bus drove
to Deep Creek School house where a delicious lunch catered by LeGrand's
Conerstone Cafe in Alma was served.
After driving by the Docking house, a stop was made at the
Meacham/Barr cabin. The "Early History of Wabaunsee County" written by
Matt Thomson records the sad story of the little Meacham boy who turned
up missing and was not found until a year later.
After driving to the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, our bus driver, Bill Glotzbach drove through and stopped at historic Pillsbury Crossing.
Other stops were the Tabor Valley School house where Mt. Tabor was
also in view. The tour concluded with a stop at the Beecher Bible and
Rifle Church at Wabaunsee.
